Built Area Density

This map shows the total square feet of building floor area per acre of land for each census block group.

Land use data was retrieved from MapPluto: https://www.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/dwn-pluto-mappluto.page

Jobs data was retrieved from US Census LEHD statistics: https://lehd.ces.census.gov/data/lodes/LODES8/LODESTechDoc8.0.pdf

1 Acre  =  43,560 square feet, so green and blue census block groups have average FAR above 1.

Residential Units per Acre

This map shows the total number of residential units per acre of land for each census block group.

Land use data was retrieved from MapPluto: https://www.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/open-data/dwn-pluto-mappluto.page

Jobs data was retrieved from US Census LEHD statistics: https://lehd.ces.census.gov/data/lodes/LODES8/LODESTechDoc8.0.pdf

Jobs per Acre

This map shows the total number of jobs per acre of land for each census block group.

Jobs data was retrieved from US Census LEHD statistics: https://lehd.ces.census.gov/data/lodes/LODES8/LODESTechDoc8.0.pdf

The table used is LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES), Workplace Area Characteristics. Total number of jobs column values have been aggregated per census block group.

Land Use Entropy

For this metric, MapPluto land use values were reclassified as follows:

01 One & Two Family Buildings -> R (residential)
02
Multi-Family Walk-Up Buildings -> R (residential)
03
Multi-Family Elevator Buildings -> R (residential)
04
Mixed Residential & Commercial Buildings  -> R or C depending on the Zoning District 1 value.
05
Commercial & Office Buildings -> C (commercial)
06
Industrial & Manufacturing -> I (industrial)
07
Transportation & Utility -> PTU (public, transport, utility)
08
Public Facilities & Institutions -> PTU (public, transport, utility)
09
Open Space & Outdoor Recreation -> REC (recreation)
10
Parking Facilities -> V (vacant)
11
Vacant Land -> V (vacant)

Then, the equations from (reference: https://www.gislounge.com/calculating-land-use-mix-with-gis/) were utilized.

Here is a table of hypothetical values calculated by the entropy equation for demonstration purposes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kWwbxQ_QdqWit_xEeLqvVJ9DuS9wK7hCfgO9vsoEh-Y/edit?usp=sharing

Next, the number of land use types were factored in by adding (0.2*#LandUseTypes) to the entropy value. Note that Vacant Land class has been omitted from these calculations.

Proportion of Vacant Land and Parking Lots

This map shows the proportion of total vacant and parking dedicated land to the area of each census block group.
